Going Home
After Symf. 9/II, Antonin Dvorák
Sometimes it occurs that an original melody proves so popular that, sooner or later, a text is added. Famous examples include ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ by Edward Elgar or ‘I Vow to Thee, my Country’ by Gustav Holst, both of which melodies come from symphonic works.
In the second movement of his ninth symphony, Antonín Dvořák (1841 – 1904) composed a melody for cor anglais in short phrases which is immediately memorable and especially suitable for the addition of a text. (arr.: Jelle Stellingwerf )
