Capriccio
op. 81 Nr. 3 R 32 (1843)
Andante con moto
Allegro fugato, assai vivace
This work (1843) has features in common with the capriccios by G.F. Händel (1685 - 1759) and is divided into two movements; the initial considered andante being followed by a quicker fugue. The fugal passage does full justice to the genre of the capriccio (capricious, lively), the theme tumbling through the entire work, surrounded by clown-like accompanying voices. The thematic relationship between the andante and the allegro is remarkable: the fugue subject utilises the notes b,c, d-sharp and e, drawn from the main theme of the andante.
