Duet - Antigone
Antigone op. 55 M 12/3
A duet between two solo voices – originally a bass and an oboeist, taken from the incidental music to the Greek tragedy ‘Antigone’. The romantic melodies are given forward momentum by a baroque-style ‘perpetuum mobile’ accompaniment in semiquavers. The composition (1841) was a commission by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, who wanted to stage model performances of Greek dramas in his own theatre.
