De Herdertjes lagen bij nachte
Dutch carol,15th or 16th century
A Dutch Christmas carol originally composed for the Catholic Church, but now popular in other denominations as well. The song was reconstructed in 1852 by Joseph Alberdingk Thijm (1820 - 1889), a prominent Roman Catholic writer, although the original probably dates back to the 17th or 18th century. The arrangement is conceived as an instrumental scherzo; the vocal lines are sung without text, imitating angels in the far distance. (arr.: Euwe de Jong)
