I wonder as I wander

In the scriptures of the Old Testament, God promises the world that Abraham’s seed shall bring forth a saviour. In the text of I wonder as I wander, the wandering narrator sings, full of wonder, of God’s promise fulfilled. Both melody and text have their origins in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina (USA). The folklorist John Jacob Niles (1892-1980) heard a young travelling evangelist sing fragments of a song in July 1933. From these fragments, Niles composed a beautiful melody, in a minor tonality and 3/4 time. It was published in 1934 in his ‘Songs of the Hill-Folk’. The pensive and melancholy character of the melody beautifully evokes the contemplations of the wanderer; the introduction, interlude and conclusion of the arrangement amplify the image. How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die.
For poor ord'n'ry people like you and like I;
I wonder as I wander, out under the sky.
When Mary birthed Jesus, 't was in a cow's stall,
With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all.
But high from God's heaven, a star's light did fall,
And the promise of ages it then did recall.
If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing,
A star in the sky or a bird on the wing,
Or all of God's Angels in heaven to sing,
He surely could have had it, 'cause he was the King.
