Entre le boeuf et l’âne gris
French traditional, 13th century (?)
A French Christmas carol, anonymously penned and probably dating from the 13th century. The text speaks of a donkey and an ox who guard, with the angels, over ‘le fruit de vie’ (the fruit of life). As with many different versions of this carol, the last verse has been omitted as it can be interpreted as being anti-Semitic. (arr.: Euwe de Jong)

Entre le boeuf et l'âne gris, dors le petit fils;
Entre les deux bras de Marie, dors le fruit de vie;
