BWV 1/6 & 61/6
Chorale Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern - 1725 / 1714 - Advent I
The text of this famous hymn by Philipp Nicolai (1599) can, as a consequence of its mystical character, be used at various moments during the Ecclesiastical Year. The hymn was, according to an old tradition, sung at the feast of Epiphany, but also at the feast of the annunciation - 25 March, nine months before 25 December - and during advent.
The first section of the seventh verse (Wie bin ich doch so herzlich froh) is a sombre four-voice setting of the chorale, originally found in cantata no 1. The second section is the closing chorale from cantata 61: a richly-set five-voice setting of the ‘abgesang’ (Amen) from the original hymn.
