BWV 11/4
Aria (A) Ach bleibe doch, mein liebstes Leben - 1735 - Ascension
Cantata 11, Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen, is also known as the Ascension Oratorio. Despite the joyful nature of Jesus’ ascension, this event is experienced by many as painful. The alto aria, Ach bleibe doch, mein liebstes Leben, illustrates these feelings through its use of piercing intervals. Bach re-used this aria in a slightly revised form as the Agnus Dei from the Mass in b minor (Hohe Messe, BWV 232).
