BWV 80/1
Prelude super Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott - 1731 - Reformation
canto fermo in canone (soprano e basso)
The opening chorus of this famous chorale cantata has undergone a metamorphosis and become a grand organ work in the “old” 16th century motet style, comparable with Bach´s six-part organ composition Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (BWV 686).
The structure of the work is as follows: Each of the 9 phrases of the melody serves as the subject of a short fugal development, after which the cantus firmus appears in soprano, followed closely by the bass. The metaphor of this strictly canonical concept is clear: Ein feste Burg is the heavenly leader and man is the earthly follower.
