BWV 161/1
Chorale concertato Komm, du süße Todesstunde - 1715 - Trinity XVI
Komm, du süße Todesstunde was not originally a Good Friday cantata –during Holy Week no instrumental music was permitted in the Lutheran churches of Bach’s area– but was composed for the 16th Sunday after Trinity. The cantata opens with an arrangement of the melody O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden. This is a composition of touching beauty, comparable with the opening chorus of the Matthäus Passion. Bach couples the intense ‘suffering melody’ with tender ‘kissing motifs’: Dass ich meinen Heiland küsse (‘That I might kiss my Saviour’).
