BWV 49/6
Arie + Choral Dich hab ich je und je geliebet / Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern - 1726 - Trinity XX
Cantata 49 is a characteristic ‘dialogue’ composition (a genre which was especially popular in the 17th century). According to an old church tradition, the dialogue occurs between Christ as the bridegroom and the individual Christian (or the church) as His bride. The musical expression of this dialogue in the cantata’s sixth movement is of an unparalleled beauty. Two independent voices - both of which sing material based on the opening of the chorale melody - respond to each other and encircle the cantus firmus Wie bin ich doch so herzlich froh heard in long notes in the alto. It is a masterful example of Bach’s polyphonic art.
