BWV 4/4
Chorale Trio Christ lag in Todes Banden - 1707-1708 - Easter
In the third verse, Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn, the cantus firmus is heard in long notes in the tenor, surrounded by a continuous bass line in quavers and a dancing counter melody in the style of the so-called imitatio violistica. In this instrumental version the faltering end of this section can be experienced as rather illogical. The text, however, clarifies Bach’s intentions: Da bleibet nichts denn Tods Gestalt. “Here remains nothing but death's outward form.”
