BWV 208/6
Aria (S) Schafe können sicher weiden - Hunt Cantata - 1713
This aria is taken from the so-called ‘hunting’ cantata (1713), composed for the birthday of Count Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels. The text of the cantata creates parallels between the Count and the mythical figure of Pan, the god of the shepherds and their flocks. Pales, goddess of shepherds, praises countries fortunate enough to have a good regent in her aria Sheep may safely graze.
A pair of flutes (the flutes of Pan) decorate Pales’ melody. In this recording the second flute part is played at alto pitch. This deviates from Bach’s original, scored for a pair of recorders, but delivers a beautifully transparent result on the Zwolle organ. The performers accepted as inevitable that some of the motives would be inverted as a result. Sybolt de Jong also added a realised continuo part.
