BWV 248/IV/6
Aria (T) Ich will nur dir zu Ehren leben - 1734/35 - Christmas
This piece is a parody of an aria which was originally found in the secular cantata Lasst uns sorgen, lasst uns wachen BWV 213/7; the so-called ‘Hercules’ cantata. The text in the original cantata speaks of the promise of Virtue to Hercules to help him to lead a virtuous life. In this tenor aria from the fourth cantata of the Christmas Oratorio, however, the will of the faithful Christian is integrated in his quest for strength and courage. For the faithful Christian can only bring honour to Christ if Christ grants him protection. The text is evoked in the music through the use of the powerful, continuous sequences, which leaves no possibility for doubt. This aria could also fall into the category of ‘quartet-sonata’.
