BWV 114/1
Chorale Concerto Ach, lieben Christen, seid getrost - 1724 - Trinity XVII
canto fermo in soprano
The opening chorus of Cantata 114 speaks of the heavenly joy which awaits those who do penance. Two contrasting rhythmical figures – stately crotchets juxtaposed with a characteristic ‘figura corta’ motif (long - short - short) – evoke the notions of penance and joy. The motifs are drawn from the chorale melody and are woven into the ritornello. Above this beautifully crafted texture, the chorale melody is heard in the soprano.
